Nathaniel
Hawthorne's 'The Celestial Railroad' / Connection With
American Culture
[ send

6 pages in length. Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Celestial
Railroad' is indicative of American culture in that it
utilizes the railroad as a means by which people aspired
to achieve their dreams. The author's manner in presenting
the manipulative ways humanity will go about chasing
illusive fantasies is captured wholly and without
reservation, with the railroad employed as its primary
medium. The emergence of the railroad in regards to its
history and place in American culture cannot be overlooked
in the scheme of mankind's quest for the easy way out.
Indeed, the railroad became symbolic of all things
possible in one's lifetime, for it availed itself as a
conduit between dreams and reality. Consequential to
Hawthorne's 'The Celestial Railroad' is the fact that this
particular aspect of American culture has not always been
viewed in a positive light, but rather this never-ending
journey toward quick and easy prosperity has often been
plagued by shortsighted greed. The writer discusses
American culture as it relates to Hawthorne's story.
